NASA's Cleaner Water from Space

NASA's satellite technology has allowed water quality in the sense of eutrophication and excessive algae growth be measured by examinining the Chlorophyll-A levels in the water. Factors that might contribute to this excessive algae growth include runoff of nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen, temperature of the water, the amount of light, and the turbidity of the water.

As excessive algae grows, a process known as eutrophication occurs, in which the algae creates a turbid environment where other organisms in the water eventually cannot get enough oxygen, temperature increases, and result in polluted water with low water quality.
